As a Philadelphia engagement photographer, I’ve been a part of so many gorgeous shoots, and I know exactly what you should wear for you to feel beautiful and confident, and that would also look perfect in the photos!

So let’s dive in!

Choose a Timeless Look

When choosing what to wear for your engagement photos, I recommend choosing a timeless look. What I mean by timeless is – look for an outfit you won’t regret wearing in 5 years. Maybe it’s something in your closet you already love wearing and have worn it often lately, and see yourself wearing it (or something similar) in the future!

Consider the Location 

Where are we shooting your beautiful engagement photos? In a dreamy forest? An urban setting? The beach at sunset? Consider your location when choosing your outfits! This way, your clothes will naturally blend into the surroundings while making you two the focal point!

Dress for the Season

Our lovely East Coast provides us with a whole range of seasons to choose from! Add some color or bold texture for winter months to make your photos POP and give them dimension. 

In contrast, you could get away with all whites/creams or neutrals during summer! The captivating light and colors of the season will make your photos STUNNING!

What Color to Wear for Engagement Photos

Earthy-toned colors and neutrals are usually the GO-TO! They compliment the natural setting beautifully and avoid looking out of place. However, it’s okay to have a POP of color, but don’t overcrowd your outfit with too many hues. The key to that is to have a nice balance!

Bring a Few Outfits

I always recommend bringing at least 2 outfits with you for your engagement photos! Why? This will give you the opportunity to showcase your personal style, and most importantly, it provides a variety of shots and looks to choose from!

And if you’re planning to have an engagement session at the beach, a spare outfit will come in handy if you decide to splash around (which I HIGHLY recommend) and get wet during your session!

Stay True To You

One of the most important things when you are trying to decide what to wear for your engagement photos is that you stay true to yourself! You should feel great, comfortable, and CONFIDENT in your outfits. After all, these photos are about capturing your love and your story!

Engagement Photo Outfits to Avoid

Here’s the thing – your engagement photo outfits can make or break your photos. They are an important aspect of your engagement shoot’s whole vibe and aesthetic.

So these are the looks I’d avoid wearing for your engagement photos:

• Stay away from constricting, starchy, or business-like clothes like blazers. We’re going for comfortable, cozy, and fun!
• NO to sports/athletic wear, gym clothes, or gym shoes. (Cute casual sneakers are okay!)
• If logos or branding are bigger than a quarter, opt for something else without branding or words.
• Stay away from trendy patterns and very bright/neon colors!
